Arsenal of Democracy Chapter

A Message from the Chapter President

30 June 2015

Greetings to you! We hope your summer is off to a great start. The chapter’s is with a number of events in the coming months. More on that shortly.

First, we want to thank all of our members and sponsors who joined us for the 1 June Golf Outing at Wyndgate Country Club. It was a great day among our growing military community as we raised money for the chapter’s many initiatives and distributed some great prizes. We are very grateful to Bob Schumitz and his terrific committee for a grand event.

And what a fantastic Army Ball we had on 19 June at the Detroit Yacht Club. Our Commanding General provided a super birthday tribute to our Army. Our speaker, MG Jimmie Keenan, was entertaining. The meal and the sunset were equally outstanding. And lots of great pictures were captured, both formal and fun, for the ages. Thanks so much to Susan Davis‐Kienscherf and her marvelous committee for another great ball celebrating our Army’s 240th birthday. Immediately following that on the 20th, our team went west as Valde Garcia and Dick Miller, our AUSA state president, traveled to the National Guard Association of Michigan (NGAM) annual meeting where we met some old friends and gained some new members.

On the 21st, our very own Nick and Karen Straffon were in Benton Harbor to represent AUSA as we helped honor a number

of Vietnam veterans including medal of honor recipients. You’ll enjoy seeing those photos as well. From a business perspective, your chapter closed the fiscal year on June 30th with more new members than last year, thanks to you and our membership committee, led by Mark Montjar and Tammy Kielian, which is vital to AUSA’s ability to speak for the Army. And, thanks to you, we have raised notable sums of money for causes managed by efficient, fiscally responsible organizations that provide necessary services to our military. A very good year it was. As for upcoming events, the annual luncheon committee, led by Sam Homsy, is underway. Keep an eye on the website for more details. It promises to be an outstanding event with our arsenal leadership team and another remarkable speaker who will help us recognize and honor chapter and community members for their accomplishments.

As always, know that we are here to serve you. Please don’t hesitate to let us know how we can do that better.

See you soon!
George Patten
